Nesta quinta-feira (24), a Seleção Brasileira vai estrear na Copa do Mundo 2022 com Thiago Silva, cria de Xerém, como capitão. Há 92 anos, esta responsabilidade também pertencia a um atleta com ligação com o Tricolor. O ponta Preguinho foi o primeiro a usar a braçadeira na história do Brasil em Copas.
Filho do escritor Coelho Netto, Preguinho tem a história ligada ao Fluminense e a Seleção Brasileira. Em 1930, o ponta-esquerda já havia se firmado como artilheiro do Flu e um dos principais do futebol carioca. As boas atuações o levaram a ser convocado pelo técnico Píndaro de Carvalho Rodrigues para a primeira Copa do Mundo, realizada no Uruguai.
Além de entrar com a braçadeira de capitão, Preguinho foi pioneiro ao ser o primeiro da Seleção Brasileira a balançar as redes em uma Copa do Mundo, na derrota por 2 a 1 para a extinta Iuguslávia. E, com os dois gols na goleada sobre a Bolívia, terminou como o primeiro artilheiro do Brasil na história do Torneio.

De acordo com o livro “Seleção Brasileira – 90 Anos”, de Antônio Carlos Napoleão e Roberto Assaf, Preguinho fez ao todo cinco jogos pelo Brasil, com quatro vitórias e uma só derrota.

Mais do que um grande jogador, Preguinho foi acima de tudo um grande atleta e em muitas modalidades. No dia de sua estreia como jogador de futebol em 1925, por exemplo, o jovem conquistou o terceiro estadual de natação na categoria 600m e ainda com a medalha no peito foi para Laranjeiras ajudar o Flu a conquistar o Torneio Início do Rio de Janeiro, um dos quatro títulos que conquistou pelo clube.
Aquele que ficou conhecido como o “atleta mais completo do século” praticou também natação, remo, polo aquático, saltos ornamentais, atletismo, basquete, vôlei, hóquei sobre grama e tênis de mesa, conquistando assim 387 medalhas e 55 títulos individuais.
Mas a sua carreira no futebol também não fica para atrás. Preguinho, por exemplo, conquistou um Campeonato Carioca na Era do Amadorismo (1933) e dois na Era Profissional (1937 e 1938) — quando abriu mão do salário só para poder jogar pelo clube do coração. Além disso, terminou como artilheiro da competição em 1930 e em 1932.
Com 128 gols marcados, aliás, o ponta-esquerda é o oitavo maior artilheiro da história do clube — o nono contando só jogos oficiais. E até hoje é o maior goleador do Estádio de Laranjeiras, com 79.
Por tudo isso, o próprio Coelho Netto reconheceu, “Já escrevi mais de 100 livros e ainda sou apontado na rua como o pai do Preguinho”.
Reconhecido como “Grande Benemérito-Atleta” pelo Tricolor em 1952, Preguinho faleceu aos 74 anos, em 1979, devido a problemas pulmonares. Mas o Fluminense homenageia o ídolo com um busto na entrada da sede social em Laranjeiras.
