Após a vitória contra o Olimpia no Defensores Del Chaco, o tricolor já conhece seu próximo adversário na competição, o Internacional. Ao todo são seis duelos em quatro competições diferentes, com bastante equilíbrio entre as duas equipes. Cada time saiu vitorioso em duas ocasiões, a primeira sendo no Brasileiro de 75, quando o Inter comandado por Falcão derrotou a máquina Tricolor em pleno Maracanã. O Colorado veio a ser campeão da edição em cima do Cruzeiro.

17 anos depois, as equipes decidiram a final da Copa do Brasil e o Internacional levou a melhor outra vez em um confronto com muita polêmica de arbitragem. Após vencer por 2 a 1 o jogo de ida nas Laranjeiras, o Tricolor foi derrotado no Beira Rio por 1 a 0, amargurando o vice-campeonato.
O reencontro entre as equipes veio nas oitavas de final da Copa Libertadores de 2012. Após um empate sem gols em Porto Alegre, a vaga para as quartas foi decidida no Engenhão e, com gols de Leandro Euzébio de Fred, o Fluminense se garantiu na sequência da competição.
A última vez que as equipes ne enfrentaram foi em 2016, na Primeira Liga. Em jogo único, o Fluminense se classificou para a final da competição nos pênaltis após um empate por 2 a 2 no tempo normal. A equipe tricolor veio a ser campeã da competição sobre o Athletico PR.
Para esse ano, Fluminense e Inter decidem a vaga para a final e já tem datas confirmadas para se enfrentarem. O jogo de ida será no dia 27/09 às 21h30 no Maracanã, e a volta no dia 04/10, no Beira Rio.
