Filho de Henrique Coelho Netto e irmão de Mano, ex-jogador do Fluminense, o ídolo estreou pelo clube dentro de campo com título, logo depois de ter sido campeão de natação, no mesmo dia.
Em 19 de abril de 1925, o Tricolor disputou o Torneio Início, sediado em Laranjeiras, em busca do bi e da terceira conquista do campeonato. Aos 20 anos, o promissor Preguinho era aguardado para sua estreia, mas demorou a chegar ao local da competição.

Na primeira rodada, Coelho marcou no triunfo por 1 a 0 sobre o Syrio Libanez. Na semi, novamente pelo placar mínimo, o Time de Guerreiros venceu o Sport Club Brasil, com gol de Lagarto.
Preguinho só apareceu a minutos da final, contra o São Cristóvão. Ele atrasou porque, simultaneamente ao Torneio Início, era promovida um campeonato de natação, na praia de Botafogo, com o “superatleta” entre os competidores. Também como representante do Flu, o esportista levou a melhor na prova de 600 metros.
“Eu nem sabia falar e o Fluminense já estava em minha alma, em meu coração, em meu corpo”, disse, certa vez.
O episódio gera divergência entre historiadores, que especulam sobre como Preguinho chegou a tempo de jogar a partida: de bicicleta, de táxi ou até mesmo correndo.
Na chegada ao estádio, o jogador precisou se secar e trocar de roupa para, enfim, entrar em campo. Veloz e eficiente, contribuiu para o gol de Lagarto, que garantiu o troféu.
Nas quatro linhas, Preguinho vestiu as cores verde, branco e grená de 1925 a 1938, período em que anotou 128 gols em 174 jogos. Foi campeão carioca em 1937 e 1938. Além disso, é o maior goleador do Estádio das Laranjeiras, com 78 gols.
Adepto do amadorismo, o artilheiro jamais quis ser remunerado para defender o clube, mesmo depois da profissionalização do futebol no Brasil, em 1933.
Capitão da Seleção Brasileira na primeira Copa do Mundo, no Uruguai, em 1930, Preguinho marcou o primeiro gol da Canarinho em mundiais. Com cinco partidas pela equipe, balançou a rede nove vezes.
Na sede de Laranjeiras, a lenda é homenageada com um busto localizado em frente ao ginásio que leva seu nome. Nascido em 8 de fevereiro de 1905, ele morreu em 1979, aos 74 anos, no Rio.
