Com novos acordos de transmissão, Libertadores e Sul-Americana de 2023 terão VAR desde o início
As competições oficiais da CONMEBOL (Libertadores e Sulamericana) sempre foram alvo de muitas críticas com relação ao VAR pelo fato do equipamento não ser utilizado nem nas fases prévias e nem na fase de grupos. Entretanto, para o próximo ano dos torneios, isso sofrerá alterações.
Com todos os direitos de transmissão vendidos por cerca de US$ 1.5 bilhão pelo quadriênio de 2023 a 2026, envolvendo a TV aberta (Globo) (Globo), fechada (ESPN), streaming (Paramount e Star+) e melhores momentos (OneFootball), fez com que entidade tivesse recursos para passar a utilizar o VAR desde a fase inicial da Libertadores e Sul-Americana a partir do próximo ano.
Com esse valor recorde de venda de direitos de mídia, a pressão para que a tecnologia fosse usada aumentou, uma vez que o lado financeiro não seria mais motivo para que o VAR não estivesse presente. Outro motivo sempre alegado pela CONMEBOL é a falta de estrutura de alguns estádios para receber a tecnologia. Neste ano, a fase de grupos não conta com a tecnologia.

Para 2023, com a o vídeo árbitro desde o início, o objetivo é minimizar as críticas aos erros de arbitragem, algo que já tem ocorrido com bastante frequência neste ano. Na atual edição, o VAR entra a partir dos jogos das oitavas de final. Para 2023, ainda que certamente não exista empecilho, o Conselho Arbitral ainda precisará aprovar.
