Ainda que esteja afastado do cargo, Celso Barros é o Vice-Presidente do Fluminense. O ex-patrocinador concedeu uma entrevista para o “O Globo”, onde falou sobre a responsabilidade dos clubes nesse momento:
“Todos os clubes e lideranças têm responsabilidade e um papel importante sobre o que estamos vivendo. Governadores, dirigentes, presidentes, médicos e tantos outros profissionais ligados à área de saúde… Todos têm um papel fundamental na imagem que se passa. O Presidente [da República, Jair Bolsonaro] falou lá atrás que era uma “gripezinha” e temos mais de 20 mil mortos. Uma “gripezinha” não mata tanta gente. Essa imagem confunde a população. Ele tem um discurso desde o primeiro óbito e, com 20 mil mortes, o discurso é o mesmo.”
Celso voltou a falar sobre o encontro de presidentes (Alexandre Campello, Rodolfo Landim e Jair Bolsonaro):

“O presidente do Vasco é um médico que eu respeito, tenho nada contra ele e nem contra o do Flamengo. Falo da representação desse momento. Eu postei em 1º de maio que achava um absurdo estar se discutindo a volta ao futebol. É 22 de maio e ainda estamos nessa discussão. Não é tempo para esse tipo de decisão. O Rio tem quatro clubes na Série A, São Paulo tem cinco, e são Estados com alta incidência de coronavírus. Imagina lá no Ceará, que tem dois clubes e um número de casos elevado.”
Sobre o retorno do futebol, Celso, que também é médico, foi claro:
“Não dá para pensar em jogo de Campeonato Brasileiro nem de Estadual na minha opinião. Não dá para pensar nem em treinamento com esse distanciamento [social], imagina jogo – mesmo sem público – nesta fase. É uma situação que não vemos como próxima de se resolver. Tomara Deus que em um curto espaço de tempo possamos ter uma situação mais tranquila. Jogador de futebol não é só ele, tem esposa, namorada, uma comunidade grande à sua volta.”
Ao ser indagado sobre o futebol ser uma distração durante o isolamento, o vice-presidente citou os jogos antigos como exemplos positivos. Ele também falou que tudo deve ser pensado e realizado com muito cuidado;
“Futebol na minha opinião é extremamente necessário, eu confesso que tenho saudade de ver os jogos. Gostei muito da reprise do Renato Gaúcho [Fluminense x Flamengo, na final do Carioca de 1995] e estou ansioso para ver a do Palmeiras [jogo do título do Campeonato Brasileiro de 2012]. O Prefeito [do Rio] se reuniu com o presidente [Bolsonaro] e disse que tem que voltar o futebol. Reflexo claro da reunião. Tenho nada contra os presidentes de Flamengo e Vasco, estou doido para o futebol voltar, sei das dificuldades dos clubes, mas acho que isso tem que ser feito com muita segurança.”
Perguntado sobre o que pensa da situação, Celso respondeu:
“Acho que o grupo técnico que trabalha no Governo do Estado e na Prefeitura tem competência. Em 1º de maio era praticamente impossível voltar. No início da próxima semana? Parece que estão tentando forçar, não parece o mais adequado. Eu sou médico, fico fazendo leituras e ouvindo o pensamento da comunidade científica. Não custa nada esperar mais um pouco para que possamos ter uma posição mais baseada em ciência, em dados estátisticos e com segurança para o futebol.”
Outro assunto abordado na entrevista foi o uso da cloroquina:
“Com uma morte, o presidente [Bolsonaro] não queria que tivesse isolamento e que a população tomasse a cloroquina. Com 20 mil mortes, foi liberado pelo Ministério da Saúde o uso para pacientes no início da infecção. Isso não pode ser pautado como remédio salvador. Os trabalhos científicos comprovaram que não tem esse valor. Os pacientes podem evoluir bem ou não, mas o uso da cloroquina pode refletir em danos para a saúde. No início dos sintomas, isso pode trazer mais maleficios que beneficios, de acordo com os estudos feito ao redor do mundo sobre o uso da cloroquina. Como foi recomendado lá atrás, esses medicamentos ficam a critério do médico assistente, que no final é o responsável junto ao paciente pelas responsabilidades éticas e legais junto ao paciente e as suas familiares. É o médico quem se responsabiliza por isso.”
