Depois de empatar em 1 a 1 com o Argentinos Jrs. no jogo de ida das oitavas de final da Copa Libertadores da América, na Argentina, o Fluminense chegou no Maracanã precisando de uma vitória simples para garantir nas quartas de final para enfrentar o Olimpia, que havia eliminado o Flamengo, no dia anterior.
